I'm originally from Minnesota, therefore Lake Life is In My Blood! Each summer, we rent a cabin on the lake and enjoy our time as a family. Some of the things that we have done include renting a pontoon, kayaking, fishing, paddle boarding, hiking in the crisp cool mountains. You do need to watch where you're walking as the train is very uneven up in Big Bear, but the trip itself is completely accessible for anyone with physical or developmental challenges. For example, when we rent the pontoon we let them know ahead of time that we are a family with an ADA member. They will then put a ramp that leads from the dock to the boat and they are very trained to assist someone with low mobility to their seat. From there, let the driver navigate the gorgeous Lake and the pine trees that surround the Sparkling Waters while you enjoy a cocktail and some appetizers. We like to go in the late afternoon and this time we were watching for those famous Eagles, Jackie, Shadow, Gizmo, and Sunny!
It is also possible to manage a kayak and a paddle board. I always go tandem and we park are kayak or paddle board close to the shore where I can gain access. I begin by sitting down in the front of the boat and gain my balance has sometimes it can be a bit wavy. Then I always have my daughter, a friend, or my husband on the same vehicle. I can roll a little bit, but my arms definitely get tired. I love being on the water and this gives me the opportunity to do so.
Finally, when looking for a rental, you really need to do your homework as many of the places have stairs. I can manage a few stairs which makes my opportunities, finding a place, greater, but it is definitely a challenge. We always want to be on the water, usually we seek a Jacuzzi, we prefer a deck with furniture, a grill. It is a tricky hunt, to say the least!
