Cruising the World

You can't go wrong with a fun Cruise! Whether you live on the east coast or the West Coast, the Northern or Southern parts of the United States, one can always find an amazing Cruise to experience different areas. Our first cruise was to Mexico with our two children. To say that the four of us had a good time is a complete understatement. We had the most amazing time!Eric and I then took our second cruise on our 20th anniversary. This time we went through the Western Caribbean. Our most recent Cruise was on the Waters of the Mediterranean where we visited Italy, Croatia, and Greece. Cruising is a great option for people with limited mobility. Most of the cabins will fit a wheelchair or other mobility device, the entire ship is accessible with smooth flooring and elevators everywhere.

Mexico

Mexico was the first cruise we ever took. We went there with our teenage children and had an amazing time with Carnival. The ship itself was completely accessible from the room, to the bathroom, to the dining area. We ended up going horseback riding along the beach at one of the stops. The staff at the horse rental establishment were highly knowledgeable with working with physically challenged individuals. They made sure I had a guide which held a lead so the horse would not take off. The guy stayed with me the entire time which made me feel very comfortable. Excellent option for elderly and small children as well. While the boys went ziplining in Puerto Vallarta, my daughter and I went kayaking at a private beach. Again, this was a great activity for somebody with limited mobility and arm strength as we did a tandem kayak. When my arms were getting tired, she was able to row the kayak making it a beautiful experience for both of us.

Caribbean

This is a cruise Eric and I took for our 20th anniversary. We decided on Royal Caribbean, the Oasis of the Seas. At the time, it was the largest boat in the world. Our excursions included snorkeling in Jamaica along with climbing Dunn's River Falls, salsa /margarita making class followed by salsa dancing in Cozumel, and finally our own over the water Bungalow in Haiti with a private attendant. Accessibility was awesome on this Cruise, but I did learn an important lesson. If you have limited strength and mobility, always check to see how you will be getting back in the boat after snorkeling. After snorkeling for about an hour and having so much fun,I learned I could not climb the ladder back into the catamaran. One of the first mates, Rasta man, jumped into the water, told me to put my arms around his neck, he then, rung by rung, carried me up that ladder on his back. He definitely got a nice tip that day. If you like swimming, most cruises offer a snorkeling excursion which is accessible for the physically challenged on most boats, but always do your homework and find out for sure.

Mediterranean

This was the trip of a lifetime! We flew into Barcelona and stayed there a few days. Eric and I are both foodies so it was fun to take a paella and sangria class. From there we flew over to Bologna, Italy where we boarded Royal Caribbeans, Explorer Of The Seas. We got a balcony and we've never done this before, but this time we got a balcony that was at the very back of the ship, on the corner of the stern. Our balcony was so large that it had two chaise lounges along with a table and chairs. Every evening Eric and I would sit out here and look at the stars. From Italy, the ship took us to Croatia, one of the prettiest countries I've ever seen. It was here that we did a little wine tasting and had a tour guide who brought us to the most beautiful areas of the country. After Croatia, we arrived in Athens Greece. Eric and I visited Acropolis which was fairly accessible. Let me explain. There is a a newly built, very beautiful glass elevator that takes you up to Acropolis so you can see the ancient ruins, but the path that takes you to the elevator is very rough, but if you take it slow, it is manageable. I used my electric scooter and went very slow as the cobblestones gave the terrain a very uneven platform.
